Soft late sunlight rests on a forest clearing und creates an almost surrealistic visual experience with its colour-intensive light reflections.
The bald trees on the edge of the clearing are stylized, almost sketched. They occupy the middle ground of the picture and serve as a strengthening colour bearer of the tonally varying mood of illumination.
The intensive warm colour glow of the middle section fades from strong orange tones to lemon green yellow tones in the foreground. Dark, impassable undergrowth spreads around. On the far right of the picture, brown-gray tree trunks are cut by the picture frame. They are formally a barrier and a window at the same time to the play of light occuring in the middle ground.
Blue and violet accents in the undergrowth magnify the surreality of the light events, in the picture level as well. The same bluish-gray palette determines the aforementioned background in which the wood fades out. Formally, the island of warm colour of the middle ground is calmed and balanced in its cool shading by the ellipse formed from foreground and background.
The representation of the trees extends beyond the picture format and dominates the composition format filling. Some branches interrupt the prevailing vertical with a swirl of diagonals and thus underline the linear structures of the work.
The surreality of the colours on trees and branches is the strength of the composition and thus a key visual element and means of expression linked with compositional clarity and formal reduction. It is a successful synthesis of surrealism and realism.

Weiches spätes Sonnenlicht ruht auf einer Waldlichtung und schafft mit seinen farbintensiven Lichtreflexionen ein fast surreal anmutendes Seherlebnis.
Die kahlen Bäume am Rand der Lichtung sind stilisiert, fast skizzenhaft dargestellt. Sie besetzen den Mittelgrund des Bildes und dienen als verstärkender Farbträger der tonal variierenden Lichtstimmung.
Das intensive warme Farbenleuchten des Mittelgrundes von kräftigen Orangetönen bis ins zitroniggrüne Gelb ebbt zum Vordergrund hin ab. Dunkles unwegsames Unterholz breitet sich aus. Ganz rechts im Bild sind braungraue Baumstämme angeschnitten. Sie sind formal Barriere und Fenster zugleich zum Lichtspiel-Geschehen im Mittelgrund.
Blaue und violette Akzente im Unterholz setzen die Surrealität des Lichtgeschehens auch in der Bildebene fort. Die gleiche blaugraue Palette bestimmt die angedeutete Hintergrundebene, in der der Wald ausläuft. Formal wird die warme Farbinsel des Mittelgrundes durch die Ellipse aus Vorder- und Hintergrund in ihrer kühlen Verschattung beruhigt und ausgeglichen.
Die Darstellung der Bäume reicht über das Bildformat hinaus und dominiert formatfüllend die Komposition. Einige Äste unterbrechen diagonal die vorherrschende Vertikale und unterstreichen so die linearen Strukturen des Werkes.
Die Irrealität der Farben an Bäumen und Zweigen ist die Stärke der Komposition und damit ein bildprägendes Ausdrucksmittel, verbunden mit kompositorischer Klarheit und formaler Reduktion. Es ist eine gelungene Synthese zwischen Surrealismus und Realismus.
